Which would you prefer ?!

I have been obsessing over touring bikes and long distance rides for a few months now, and I have come to the conclusion that there are alot of benefits and disadvantages to having either a full blown touring bike with panniers versus having a normal road bike with a trailer attached. The ones I’ve been looking at are the Soma Saga, Surly Long Haul Trucker, Trek 520 and the Burley Nomad. So here is my question to you that have experience or have been studying vigorously about this subject: Which do you prefer and why?

If you’re talking long rides, I’d say get a touring bike. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that road bikes have ‘race’ geometry and aren’t so comfortable on long rides. Plus, they are usually aluminum and therefore a rougher / harsher ride.
Touring bikes are usually steel and have relaxed angles, making for a more comfortable ride, especially on long journeys.
Besides, if you got a tourer, you could buy a Surly and be cool. :) I own a Cross-Check and love the thing.

I have a burley nomad and have done some short, overnight tours with it. I like, but I think I would prefer a Bob Yak (http://www.bobgear.com/trailers/trailer.php?product_id=10) as it has a single wheel and seems more maneuverable.

I rode with a set of rear panniers and a trailer, while my wife rode with her panniers.

I like the idea of having at least one trailer on a tour. When we went with friends, most everyone just had panniers, and I carried the trailer.

It honestly depends on how long your tour is going to be, and how independent you want to be (i.e. will you be stopping for groceries along the way, is there going to be fresh water, etc.)

I share your obsession. I’ve been looking at touring bikes for the last year and I’m not ready to pull the pin on something new. Mainly because I want a lugged frame and I’m not ready to lay out the cash a new one would cost. So I’m still in search of an old Fuji America or Raleigh International…I want chrome too…But I might give up and buy something new…The Soma you linked to is gorgeous!

Look into a Kona Sutra. Gorgeous bike.

I just upgraded to a Trek Soho from a Trek Navivator 3.0. Drastic improvement on a commute of 10 miles a day. But I do like the Trek 520 out of the list you have given.
