I wouldn't claim one right way to lock up. I'd put the U-lock through the frame as well; if someone cuts that cable it seems they can take the frame off the back wheel and make off with most of the bike. We also have quite a lot of slack in that cable; it could be used to further secure the bike to the rack as well as to itself. Overall, it looks fairly solid, though.

Putting the U-Lock there protects the back tire AND the frame.  If you attempted to take the back wheel off the wheel and the u-lock would have to go through the rear triangle.  The only thing that the cable protects is the front wheel.

I usually put a mini-U around the rear wheel and seat tube.

You can fit that setup around most things including parking meters which work really well.  the tighter it is the harder it is to remove the lock.  i dont worry too much about someone stealing my front wheel in dallas.

if i lived in say, new york, i'd probably do the mini-u in back and one of these guys around the downtube and front wheel:

if you have a kryptonite its probably a good idea to register the key # on their website.

edit: just remembererd that someone did steal the front wheel off my beat up 20" stingray last month...
